What is an Elder?

To answer this common question requires us to dive into God's Holy Word to allow God to define the office for us. Key passages to read and study are:

1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, Acts 20:17-32, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.

From these passages we learn that men must qualify (1 Tim. 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9), and also that the terms Elder, Bishop (Overseer), and Pastor (Shepherd) are interchangeable terms for this specific office of leadership. The elders are the first line of defense for the flock of God who protect the flock from vicious wolves. They provide nourishment for the sheep as a good shepherd does. Their work is spiritual and it's never ending. Men who step up to lead, are worthy of honor, but they are often underappreciated.
