What is a Deacon?

As with our elders, it is incumbent upon us to seek to comprehend this office through God's word. The key passages to study for the office of deacon are:

Acts 6:1-6 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13

Just like with elders, men who serve in the office of deacon must meet certain qualifications (1 Timothy 3:8-13). When we consider Acts 6:1-6, though the text doesn't come out and call the Seven deacons, it certainly is a parallel to what a deacon will do. Elders are to focus their attention and work on the spiritual needs of the congregation, yet there are many things with a congregation that can distract a man eager to sere the flock. Building maintenance, seeing to benevolence of the needy, etc, but with those distractions the work of an elder could be neglected. By God's wisdom, He provides the office of deacon to assume the duties that are good works but not "prayer and ministry of the word."

These faithful men provide a critical service to the church so the elders can do theirs.
